A day's power

She lived in a sub-standard house in the squalid part of the city. On a very ordinary day, as a matter of practice, when she read what was written on the small scrap of paper, which came wrapped around the two biscuits she bought from the petty shop for tea, her eyes widened in awe. It looked like an old manuscript that tutored the way of attaining superpowers. However, when the script ended saying that the super powers would exist only for a day, her face sagged, but the very thought of what awaited her in the next hour enforced her to exercise what the paper told.

She read the instructions carefully and ensued with utmost sincerity. Within minutes, she felt something superior engross her from top to toe. Drops of sweat oozed from her forehead chasing down to her neck.

"Let the window open", she mumbled, her eyes half-closed in suspicion.

The windows flew open. She gasped, sweating more profusely.

Despite the volley of demands that she could have asked for, an overflowing rice bag, a fully stacked purse, the best of attire and much more, what she felt more important was to shield herself from the verbal and physical assault of her husband who was about to pop in anytime.

The door flung open and he gushed in tottering, and muttering filthily as he strode.

Drunken and insane, as usual. When he reached for her, trying to pull her by her hair, she muttered something and involuntarily he twitched his hands sensing a sudden shock. Repeatedly, he tried to pull her, push her and to much of his amusement, he found himself retarding in defending action. All his madness had seemed to be dissipated and he was looking like a ginger eaten monkey staring at her, bewildered. Not a word came out of his mouth. Looking confused by the abrupt rebellion, he silently drifted away, leaving her smiling.

The next day, she awaited her husband, fears multiplying inside that he would revenge for what happened yesterday, but to her surprise, he came undrunk, still looking mortified. Rather did he have a clue that the super powers would have vanished. The one-day-super power, did have an effect. She felt a sweep of bright light shine out of troubled clouds and she held the paper close to her chest, folded it neatly to pass it on to her neighbor, who lives next door and sails on the same boat!

PS: When something superficial stops people from drinking, families would flourish and so would the country!

  2. Incredible. Well narrated. Loved this story and the way you have ended it. The fact that she used the power for her benefit in a way that could change her husband's habits is commendable.
